A study conducted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef), in
2003 concluded that ”In Uruguay, poverty tends to concentrate among
the youngest sectors of the population, particularly children.”.
According to said study, there are nine poor children per adult in
Uruguay. Almost half (46,6%) of all Uruguayan children and
adolescents live in poverty.
”Street children
and child labor are both visible signs of poverty”, the report
states.
”There is a strong correlation between adolescent labor and school
dropout rates. Seven out of every ten adolescents who work, do not
go to school.”
